“This is a milestone release that integrates years of development into a polished, ready-to-use system,” said a spokesperson for the Fedora Asahi special interest group. “Users will notice smoother performance and better compatibility out of the box.”

The new remix retires proprietary Mesa and virglrenderer packages, transitioning all users to upstream Fedora repositories automatically.

Background

Fedora Asahi Remix is a collaborative effort between the Fedora Asahi SIG and the Asahi Linux project. It provides a fully-featured Fedora experience optimized for Apple’s custom silicon. The project has been steadily improving driver support and desktop integration since its initial release.

Version 44 follows Fedora’s six-month release cycle and incorporates all upstream improvements from Fedora Linux 44. Previous versions (42, 43) can be upgraded directly.

What This Means

For Apple Silicon Mac users, this release means access to the latest Fedora innovations—including improved performance, updated packages, and better hardware support. The shift to upstream Mesa and virglrenderer ensures users get faster bug fixes and broader compatibility with Linux applications.

It also solidifies Fedora Asahi as a primary Linux distribution for Apple Silicon, with a choice of desktop environments suitable for different workflows.

Desktop and Server Options

Fedora Asahi Remix 44 offers KDE Plasma 6.6 as the flagship desktop, featuring a new Plasma-native setup wizard and Plasma Login Manager. A GNOME 50 variant is also available, along with a Fedora Server edition for headless deployments and a Minimal image for custom builds.

“Whether you need a full desktop or a lightweight server, Fedora Asahi Remix 44 has an option,” added the spokesperson.

Installation and Upgrade Path

New users can follow the official installation guide. Existing users on version 42 or 43 can upgrade using KDE Plasma Discover or the DNF system upgrade command. GNOME Software upgrade is not supported.
